Hootsuite Integration Guide
Connect Hootsuite publishing, social profiles, messages, media, and organizational data with enterprise systems through REST APIs, OAuth 2.0, and selected webhook notifications.
Hootsuite integration options at a glance
Hootsuite’s primary integration mechanism is its REST API, which supports access to Organizations, Teams, Users, Social profiles, Messages, Media, and related resources. Hootsuite uses OAuth 2.0, with scopes determined by the resources and operations required. Selected webhook-style notifications may be available, but event coverage must be validated for each use case. Media can be uploaded or associated with social messages through applicable endpoints. Martini can orchestrate these calls, schedule synchronization workflows, validate content and media, persist identifiers, apply profile-specific rules, and expose downstream APIs that abstract Hootsuite operations.
Common Hootsuite integration patterns
Common Hootsuite data objects used in integrations
Authentication and security considerations
OAuth 2.0 and least privilege
Hootsuite API access uses OAuth 2.0. Request only the scopes required for the Organizations, Teams, Users, Social profiles, Messages, and Media operations in the workflow.
Secure configuration
Store client credentials, access tokens, refresh credentials, and environment-specific identifiers in Martini secrets or secure environment configuration rather than embedding them in workflows.
Operational protection
- Handle token expiration, refresh behavior, revoked consent, disconnected profiles, and insufficient permissions.
- Do not log client secrets, access tokens, or sensitive message content unnecessarily.
- Validate webhook requests and apply correlation and deduplication controls before processing events.
Operational considerations for Hootsuite integrations
Rate limits and pagination
Confirm Hootsuite limits for the application and operations in use. Treat collection responses as paginated unless documented otherwise, persist checkpoints, and use controlled concurrency with exponential backoff for rate-limit and transient server errors.
Publishing and idempotency
Store source campaign identifiers, Hootsuite Message identifiers, Media identifiers, and status transitions. Check for an existing scheduled Message before retrying a timed-out create request, and distinguish accepted or scheduled from finally published.
Media and social-network rules
Validate MIME type, size, dimensions, duration, accessibility, character limits, mentions, links, and scheduling behavior for each target Social profile. Do not assume content valid for one social network is valid for another.
Testing and change management
Test OAuth, pagination, Media upload, scheduling, status responses, retries, and profile-specific validation. Isolate Hootsuite mappings and add contract tests for API versions, required fields, and enum changes.
Observability
Log correlation identifiers, Hootsuite resource IDs, status codes, and sanitized error details. Route messages requiring human review to exception or dead-letter workflows.
Why use Martini instead of scripts or point-to-point integrations?
Orchestration beyond point-to-point calls
Martini coordinates Hootsuite with marketing, customer-care, work-management, notification, and database systems in reusable workflows rather than embedding one-off API calls in individual scripts.
Controlled transformation
Martini provides explicit mappings, transformations, validations, profile-specific rules, and canonical models for Hootsuite Organizations, Teams, Users, Social profiles, Messages, and Media.
Reliability and maintainability
- Use scheduled, API-led, and selected event-driven workflows.
- Centralize OAuth configuration, retries, checkpoints, idempotency, and exception handling.
- Expose controlled Martini APIs when downstream applications should not depend directly on Hootsuite details.
- Monitor workflow execution and preserve useful audit information without exposing secrets.
