Mailchimp Integration Guide
Connect Mailchimp Audiences, campaigns, members, and reports with enterprise systems through REST APIs, selected webhooks, batch operations, and Martini workflows.
Mailchimp integration options at a glance
Mailchimp integrations are primarily built on the Mailchimp Marketing API, a REST API covering Audiences, Audience members, campaigns, templates, tags, segments, reports, and batch operations. Mailchimp also supports webhook-style notifications for selected Audience and member events, while asynchronous batch operations support larger imports and updates. OAuth 2.0 and API keys are available for authentication, with API-key requests sent to the account’s datacenter-specific host. Martini can call these endpoints from workflows, paginate through collections, transform JSON, apply consent and business rules, receive selected webhook events through a Martini API, and persist synchronization state or reporting data in an SQL database.

Authentication and security considerations
Authentication options
Mailchimp documents OAuth 2.0 for delegated access and API keys for controlled server-to-server integrations. API keys commonly use HTTP Basic Authentication, and requests must be sent to the account’s datacenter-specific API host.
Credential protection
- Store OAuth tokens, API keys, client secrets, and datacenter-specific configuration in Martini secrets or protected deployment configuration.
- Use OAuth 2.0 when users or multiple Mailchimp accounts authorize access; use API keys for controlled internal integrations where appropriate.
- Restrict API façade access with Martini authentication and authorization controls.
- Treat webhook payloads as external input and apply validation, accepted-method controls, and network or authentication protections where available.
Operational considerations for Mailchimp integrations
Reliability and scale
- Handle Mailchimp throttling responses, including HTTP 429, with bounded concurrency and retry backoff.
- Follow count and offset pagination for Audience members, campaigns, reports, templates, tags, and segments.
- Use batch operations for suitable high-volume updates, then poll and reconcile individual failures.
- Persist synchronization cursors, batch identifiers, event fingerprints, and source identifiers outside transient workflow state.
Data and lifecycle controls
- Audience merge fields, tags, interests, and segments can vary by account, so validate the target schema before synchronization.
- Do not automatically resubscribe unsubscribed contacts, and distinguish subscribed, unsubscribed, cleaned, and other permitted contact states.
- Validate campaign lifecycle state before attempting content, recipient, or delivery changes.
- Test webhook handling for duplicate delivery, malformed input, unsupported event types, and rapid acknowledgement requirements.
Observability
Log request correlation identifiers, resource identifiers, pagination progress, batch status, retry decisions, and rejected records. Monitoring and replay paths should allow failed member updates and report loads to be corrected without reprocessing successful operations.
Why use Martini instead of scripts or point-to-point integrations?
Orchestrate beyond a single API call
Scripts can call Mailchimp, but enterprise integrations also need scheduling, pagination, consent rules, batch polling, enrichment, downstream writes, and operational recovery. Martini organizes those concerns in reusable workflows and APIs.
Keep mappings and rules maintainable
Mailchimp Audience schemas are configurable and differ between accounts. Martini centralizes mappings, transformations, validation, and business rules instead of scattering them across point-to-point scripts.
Build governed integration services
Martini can expose an internal API façade, receive selected Mailchimp webhook events, consume the REST API, and connect the resulting data to applications, files, messaging systems, or SQL databases without requiring a dedicated Mailchimp connector.
Improve operational resilience
- Use secrets and environment configuration for credentials and datacenter-specific hosts.
- Implement retries, throttling controls, idempotent writes, and batch reconciliation.
- Monitor workflow execution and retain enough state to resume synchronization safely.
